Dr. O'Brien is the Director of the Vascular Biology Laboratory that focuses on Heat Shock Protein 27 (HSP27), a novel anti-atherosclerotic, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol lowering protein. He was the Chief of Cardiology at the University of Calgary from 2011-16. As well, he was the Director of Research at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta (Calgary) from 2011-15.
Dr. O'Brien established his career in 1994 at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, with a clinical practice that focused on coronary intervention and a research program focusing on better understanding the mechanisms involved in the development of atherosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries").
