I learned to be marketing driven at an early age in my grandmother’s café in Angers, France, in the Loire Valley. My first lesson was to understand that to serve the public well takes a quickness of mind, good shoes and a strong sense of humor.
When I was nearly 10, we came to the U.S. and I dove blissfully into American culture. After high school, I served in the U.S. Air Force with a tour in Vietnam ('67-'68) as an air evacuation medic. I earned a B.A., cum laude, in English, served in the Peace Corps in Kenya and traveled all over East Africa; then I sampled the world as a hippie, a freelance writer and newspaper reporter, sold insurance and stereo equipment, worked in inventory
