Born in Geneva to American parents, I moved to Brazil in 1987, eventually settling there. I worked at first with translation and then interpretation, while continuing to study for my doctorate, with a dissertation on the relevance of postmodern theory to Brazil. Since 1996 I have been a professor in the Brazilian federal university system, first in Bahia (UFBA) and from 2000 in Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
