Although I am in the military I oppose bureaucracy and vertical organisations. I have keenly studied Ricardo Semler and what he achieved with social democracy. While it is almost impossible to create a horizontal structure within Defence (at least from my level) I have had great success in staff empowerment.
My philosophy is that as a leader it is my job to shape the workplace environment in such a way that the individual takes sole responsibility for their role. I allow my staff to control how they perform the job and to develop their own performance parameters.
