The U.S. Navy honored Japanese-American teachers who taught Japanese language during World War 2. A ceremony was held at Pomona College to present public service awards to the teachers, known as sensei, 60 years after they taught at a Navy language school in Boulder, Colorado. Their teaching over 1,000 students proved invaluable to the U.S. intelligence and war efforts in the Pacific, as graduates went on to interrogate prisoners and translate documents. The teachers helped change students' views of Japanese people from dehumanized enemies to fellow human beings.
1. During 1941, Congressman Martin Dies claimed there was widespread Japanese espionage in California, focusing investigations on Southern California. However, his accusations were largely unsubstantiated and considered by some to be sensationalism.

This document discusses the failure of U.S. Naval Intelligence to anticipate the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Despite collecting intelligence on Japan for 40 years and conducting counterintelligence operations against Japanese officials, ONI was surprised by the attack. The document examines ONI's intelligence gathering efforts on Japan over time, including establishing a Japanese language program in the 1920s and the Army's early success in decrypting Japanese communications before World War 2, but how these efforts did little to prepare ONI for the Pearl Harbor attack.
Rare footage of Johnny Carson's early Tonight Show episodes from the 1960s was discovered in the archives of the American Forces Network Broadcast Center in Riverside, California. The 8mm film reel, which should have been destroyed decades ago, contains portions of shows from before 1972 when very little footage was preserved. Johnny Carson's nephew and president of Carson Entertainment Group, Jeff Sotzing, was excited to receive the film as it depicts a period of the show they previously had no footage from and shows Carson and guests smoking and drinking on set. The film will be converted to a digital format and made available through Carson Entertainment Group.
This document summarizes a screening of the historical drama "Emperor" about the decision making process regarding Emperor Hirohito's role after World War 2. The producers discuss why they made the film and details of filming. Key points include:
- The film focuses on Gen. MacArthur's investigation into whether Hirohito should be tried for war crimes or allowed to remain as symbolic leader.
- Filming locations included New Zealand and the Imperial Palace in Japan with rare permission.
- Producers aimed to show both American and Japanese perspectives on the postwar period.
- Some criticism was raised about the film not including the role of Japanese American translators who served during the occupation.
1) Elderly Japanese Americans who taught U.S. naval officers Japanese during World War II were honored with a military award for their service over 50 years later.
2) The 138 teachers kept Japanese language instruction running at the Navy Language School in Colorado during the war, when most Japanese Americans were incarcerated in internment camps.
3) At a ceremony, 12 surviving former teachers, who ranged in age from 89 to 97, received the Navy's Distinguished Public Service Award alongside their family members in recognition of their vital work educating officers who went on to serve as translators, interrogators, and analysts during the war.
Pedro Loureiro is an archivist at the Defense Visual Information Record Center located near March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California. He spends his time sifting through over 5,000 images and 500 videos and audio clips to find items of historical significance from the Defense Department and United States military history. Some of what he has uncovered includes rare images of events like the evacuation of the US embassy in Cambodia and old recruiting videos from the 1960s. Loureiro takes his role seriously to preserve important pieces of military history that might otherwise be lost.
