In current breeding practice, the value of parents in potential crosses is determined almost entirely from the phenotypic performance of their progenies in earlier crosses. However, with the decreasing costs of next-generation sequencing, the extra possibilities of high-throughput phenotyping of traits across major crops and animal species, and the surge in availability of gene, protein and metabolite annotations in literature and databases, there is a demand to integrate all this information across data levels, combined with pedigree and progeny information.
