I generally believe that all humans, outside of pathological illnesses, have the ability to do good (defined either through Kantian ethics as some virtue or through utilitarianism as something that is generally positive for the human race) and love. I strongly believe that a free public education is one of the most important, if not the most important things a democracy can provide to its citizens. I hold the purpose of education in our public schools to be one that nurtures a citizen with critical thinking skills (skepticism) and empathy--in essence producing citizens who can really make informed decisions about choices concerning themselves, others in our democracy, and our environment.
