About
Dr Darin Gunesekera originated a concept for sustainable Slum and Shanty dweller re-housing using the Capital Market in 1998. His projectcompleted its first cycle of land liberation in 2000. He followed this by refining his concept, called the S-REIT or Social Real Estate Investment Trust.
A livelihood project on this basis has been completed for the Varanasi Weavers in India (with Ashoka Fellow Dr Lenin). This gained Federal attention, a national Budget line and is in use for relevant national policy, the generic form following a Planning Commission presentation is now the President’s Plan for ending slums in 5 years..
