Tally Youngblood wants to become a "pretty" and undergo surgery to remove worries and thoughts. However, when her friend Shay runs away before the surgery, Tally must decide between friendship and the life she always wanted. To save Shay, Tally will have to run into the Smoke, where rebels choose to stay ugly. Tally wonders if she will betray her friends or join the rebels in their fight against the system.
