• #4: You can find much of what you need to perform system administration tasks for your IT environment on the internet. From detailed documentation and white papers to YouTube videos showing steps to perform a task, there¡¯s a lot of information available. The real problem may be justifying the time commitment to learn something new, especially if it¡¯s a one time event. Then again, say you do put in the time to figure something out, and then find yourself having to do it again in a few weeks or months; will you remember how? You sometimes have to ask yourself ¡°What is my time worth?¡±
• #5: In the IT industry, change is a constant. Sounds contradictory, but it¡¯s true! Want an example? Consider how many OS releases came out from major Vendors in the past decade or so: Microsoft has released 3 major server and 3 major desktop operating systems VMWare has released 4 major revisions of their ESX or ESXi hypervisor Red Hat and Suse combined have released 9 major revisions of their Enterprise Linux Operating Systems And don¡¯t forget software applications. Most businesses use dozens of different apps which are also frequently updated by vendors. Keeping up with these revisions can be daunting!
• #6: Revisions aside, even if a product is working great for us, we cannot use it indefinitely - vendors stop supporting their products once they reach a certain age. For example, Windows Server 2003 Support officially ends in less than a year; do you have any systems that need to be migrated from 2003 to 2008 or 2012? A lot of companies still run their Active Directory or Exchange on 2003¡­ it¡¯s been a solid OS for sure, but it¡¯s time to upgrade. • #7: You¡¯re right about that! With servers, storage, desktops, laptops, networking, Operating Systems, applications¡­ oh, and let¡¯s not forget virtualization, it¡¯s hard to have the proper expertise in every area! Most of us might be really good in a few of those eight areas but it¡¯s hard to be an expert in all of them.
• #8: Also, the learning curve can be steep¡­ We¡¯re typically wearing so many hats these days and being pulled in too many different directions to be experts at anything! It might make sense to get some outside help.
• #9: With so much riding on your IT operation, choosing the right partners to help run your environment is vitally important. Seek out vendors, service providers and consultants based upon their track record and be sure they have your best interests in mind.
