Born in Booville, New York; fourth of five children. I grew up in a drive-in restaurant in Alder Creek, New York that my parents later sold in 1976. I graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a bachelor degree in chemistry. I did graduate studies at SUNY Syracuse and was hired by the US EPA for a job in RTP, NC where I lived for about four years.
