 Aims to enhance social relations,
 Clarify team members roles,
 Solve tasks and interpersonal
problems that affect the teams
functioning.

 Refers to the activities in which
teams can change its context,
composition, or team
competencies to improve
performance.
TEAM BUILDING
TEAM BUILDING vs TEAM TRAINING
 Team building does not target skill-
based competencies.
 Team building is typically done in
settings that are not in the actual
environment where the team works
on the task.
Four Approaches to Team Building
 Goal setting-setting objectives and
developing individual and team goals,
action planning, strengthening team
motivation.
 Role Clarifications-emphasizes
increasing communications among
team members, negotiates, defines,
and adjust team roles
Note: members should realize they are
interdependent and the failure of one team
leads to the failure of the group.
Problem Solving-team members become
involved in action planning and
implementing solutions.
Interpersonal relations management-
increasing teamwork skills (i.e. mutual
supportiveness, communication, and
sharing of feelings.
Effective team building
 Members are highly interdependent,
highly knowledgeable, and
experienced in the task.
 Organizational leadership actively
establishes and supports the team.
 Members of the team must have the
willingness and the ability to speak up
about their needs.
Challenges for Todays
Teambuilding
 The lack of teamwork skills in
tomorrows workforce.
 Increasing need for teams to work
together in virtual workplaces
 Globalization and teamwork
