Scaling infrastructure to a massive size, while simultaneously driving down the cost to scale is a top priority for web scale infrastructure teams. The rate of change in the network and systems processor industries to support this growth would have, not only surprised, but shocked anyone in or teaching my systems design courses ten years ago.
