In 1969 I was a member of the newry civil rights movement and a member of the catholic ex services mens association Newry branch. I was a Republican prisoner of war in Crumlin road and Long Kesh prison from 1973-1980. I was arrested in Scotland and held for a week in Dumfries and Galloway prison and was served with an exclusion order banning me from entering England, Scotland and Wales for 9 years. In 1985 I was elected the first Sinn Fein Newry and Mourne District Councillor. This was the first Sinn Fein Councillor to be elected in Newry in 65 years. In 1998 I was elected the first Sinn Fein Chairman in Newry and Mourne and i was the first Sinn Fein chairman of the District Policing Partner
