Erik ten Winkel was born in Alkmaar (NL) on 10 September 1954.
After completing his secondary education he went to the University of Amsterdam (NL) in 1974 where he studied Biology. He graduated in 1982. He was a post doc researcher at the US Fish and Wildlife Service Great Lakes Science Center in Ann Arbor (USA).
In 1987 he obtained a cum laude doctorate in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the same university with a thesis on food web relations in a fresh water lake.
During his study from 1976 to 1982 he was intensively involved in lab and field training programs for students at the Aquatic Ecology unit and the Botany unit at the University of Amsterdam.
