After graduation specialized in surgery in Sweden and Finland, later sub-specialization in thoracic and vascular surgery in Helsinki. Worked for the International Red Cross 1982 - 1995 i(n Lebanon, Thailand-Cambodia, Pakistan-Afghanistan, Kenya-Sudan, Somalia, the Gulf war and Chechnya). PhD in 1993, then adjunct professorship in 2004 and full professorship at the University of the West Indies in Barbados in 2008.
