Development – Improvement in human
  welfare, quality of life, social well being.
Satisfying the population’s needs and wants.

          Brandt Commission in 1981
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the
 total value of goods and services
  produced by a country in a year.
Birth rate is the number of babies
  born per 1000. The higher the
   number the less developed a
             country is.
Life expectancy - the average age
to which a person lives, eg this is
79 in the UK and 48 in Kenya.
Literacy rate is the percentage of
adults who can read and write. This
is 99% in the UK, 85% in Kenya and
            60% in India.
Doctors per 100,000 tells us how
rich a country is. The more doctors
  there are, the less time patients
           have to wait.
HDI-Human Development Index
Gives a country a score between 0
    and 1 and is based on life
expectancy, education and income.
