About
I am an independent scholar and visual artist. As a scholar, I'm the author of four books on the history of sexuality and intimacy: Love Stories: Sex Between Men Before Homosexuality (2001); The Invention of Heterosexuality (1995); Gay/Lesbian Almanac (1983); and Gay American History: Lesbians and Gay Men in the U.S.A. (1976), as well as other books, articles, and reviews. Most recently, I'm the initiator and director of OutHistory.org, the website on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and heterosexual history. The site made news by publishing New York City police reports that name three formerly unknown people arrested at the Stonewall on June 28, 1969, including a woman, Marilyn Fowler.
