Bethany Hamilton was born in Hawaii in 1990 and began surfing at age 8, gaining her first sponsorship at 9. On October 31, 2003, a tiger shark attacked her while surfing with a friend, severing her left arm below the shoulder. Despite losing 60% of her blood and going into shock, Hamilton was determined to return to surfing. Just one month after the attack, she was back on her board and a year later entered her first major competition, demonstrating her perseverance in overcoming the traumatic event.

- 2. biografy She was born in Lihue, Hawaii on February 8, 1990 She started surfing at the age of 8 and gained her first sponsorship by age 9. Bethany was home-schooled until high school. In early 2012 met Adam Dirks through mutual friends, in 2013 they became engaged and married. Now a days she lives in Kauai, Hawaii and she has 3 childs.
- 3. Shark attack and recovery On October 31, 2003 she went surfing with her best friend when a 4.3 m tiger shark attacked her, severing her left arm just below the shoulder. They took her to the hospital, when she arrived she had lost the 60% of her blood and she was in a hypovolemic shock. Hamilton was determined to return to surfing.One month after the attack, she returned to her board.She adopted a board that was longer and slightly thicker than standard, she learned to kick more to make up for the loss of her left arm. She entered her first major competition on January 10, 2004.
