My great grandmother Mame Channey was the last slave in my family an educator teaching newly ex-slaves to read, write and basic math skills. My paternal grandparents immigrants from Jamaica came to America with Marcus Garvey to help build UNIA. My maternal grandparents freedom fighters worked to knock down the wall of segregation in Baltimore, Maryland to my parents active in the civil right
