Born at Alathur (Malabar) as the third of the six children to middle class parents, Mohan did his schooling and college at Palakkad, (GPMHSS, Palakkad from 1953 to ’59 and Govt. Victoria College, Palakkad from Jun 1959 to March ’63). An inmate of the Main Hostel during Jan 1961 – Mar ’63, he was in BSc (Physics). He was General Secretary of the Men’s Hostel Cabinet during 1961-62, Chairman of the College Union in 1962-63 and a Senior Under Officer in NCC Rifles. He was in the College Basket Ball team all along and was Vice Captain in 1962-63.
Commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery in August 1964, he had a long and eventful career in uniform including two battles – 1965 & 71
