The Martin Luther King, Jr. Reading and Cultural Center came into existence int he after math of the assassination of Reverend Dr. King in April 1968. In the days that followed his assassination, communities of color and beyond were shocked and grieved, and their resulting anger was manifested in riots and burnings in urban areas across our nation.
These expressions of pain and anger brought a heightend awareness of people and issues in need of attention, answers, and outlets. In one small attempt to address these needs, In 1970 Miss Elizabeth McCombs, librarian for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, brought an idea for a reading room to be established in various Pittsburgh communities
