Dr. Roberto Avanzi received his master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Padova in 1997, and his PhD from the University of Essen in 2001 (supervisor: Gerhard Frey).
Afterwards, he became interested in all aspects of cryptography, especially elliptic and hyperelliptic curves. In 2004 he was appointed Junior Professor of Cryptology at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, a position he held until September 2011. While in Bochum he became interested in other topics such as user privacy awareness and gesture based interaction with mobile devices.
