Darin Detwiler teaches U.S. History at Redmond Junior High School in Redmond, Washington. He previously served eight years as a high school Math and Science Department Head and as a district specialist in instructional technology and math/science graduation standards. Mr. Detwiler is a decorated U.S. Navy submarine veteran, having served as a mechanical engineer on nuclear reactor and propulsion plants. He 'qualified in submarines' aboard the USS William H. Bates (SSN-680) and served during the Cold War era and First Gulf War. His career plans changed when, in 1993, the Detwilers’ young son, Riley, died from E. coli during the “Jack in the Box” outbreak. This loss motivated th
