During the Renaissance period between 1300 and 1600, artistic and cultural innovation in Europe transformed medieval society. Artists discovered new techniques like painting in oil and using perspective, and created new genres of dramatic and emotional art. One such artist was Sofonisba Anguissola, an Italian noblewoman born in 1532 in Cremona who excelled in portraiture despite barriers for women artists. She studied with renowned masters and created portraits of royalty and her own family that demonstrated her skill.

She was born in Cremona in 1532. She was from Italy
She was the oldest of seven children. She had five sisters and one brother. Their names were Elena, Lucia, Europa, Minerva, Anna Maria and Asdrubale. Here you can see some of them.
She studied with Bernardino Campi and Bernardino Gatti in Cremona . And (pay attention!) with Michelangelo in Rome. Bernardino Campi Michelangelo
In the winter of 1559-1560 she arrived at Madrid to serve as a court painter. Elisabeth of Valois Anna of Austria
The famous painting of King PhilipII was long attributed to another painter(Coello or Pantoja).Only recently has Anguissola been recognized as the painting's creator
She died in Palermo (Sicily) in 1625.She was 93 years old.
