A love of the Australian bush led me to complete a PhD in ecological modeling of the flora and fauna of the largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island, off the coast of Queensland. During my studies I became fascinated with computers and after a short stint lecturing became a partner in one of the first companies to sell personal computers in Australia. Since then I have owned technology companies spanning information technology, multimedia and software development for the internet. In 2006, when I sold my last company I established Cogentia, a consultancy specialising in Green IT and the commercial impacts of climate change.
