Urban-centric lighting is the research topic of an Urban Lighting Task Group, promoted by CICAT, the Spanish Lighting Industry Cluster, and was created to carry out an innovation project of applied research about the influence of exterior lighting in human health. The project that we want to share in Healthy City Design International 2023 is a collaborative effort between companies of the lighting industry ecosystem, an applied research project aimed to foster innovation and share knowledge between the academia, the institutions, the independent consultants, the designers and the industry. The present article describes a perspective on tactical urban lighting and its power as a source for disruption and innovation in the field of urban lighting. It is the result of an applied research that is currently being carried out by a task group formed by technicians, planners, managers and designers from different private companies and public institutions with responsibility and expertise in public lighting and urban planning. The group objective is to explore innovative methods and state of the art technology implementations as a practical application of the evidence-based knowledge in the field of artificial lighting for the sake of health and well-being. The definition of health is extended, as the concept of well-being includes the urban space as an ecosystem. There is also a fundamental source of awareness that comes from social sciences about how the built environment design promotes well-being, or else constitutes a hazard for health. After a definition phase for the methodologies and the technology that would need to be developed, the task group is focused on developing new products and planning a prototype installation on a real playground. A tactical, lightweight intervention in an urban green area in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona is designed to implement, test, and communicate these innovative methods. Once the experiment is validated, a collaboration with public authorities will allow to introduce innovative perspectives in street lighting. Having received support from local’s regional government innovation programmes, through a competitiveness strengthening initiative, the project is partly funded by the European Commission.]]>

ENG Ciutat Bella (working title) is an exhibition about an ongoing project, a journey through the historical district of Ciutat Vella in Barcelona. Here you will find a selection of references and materials we are using for our research work. CAT Ciutat Bella (Títol de treball) es la muestra del trabajo en proceso del proyecto Bella, una itinerancia por Ciutat Vella de Barcelona en busca de la belleza. Aquí podéis encontrar una selección de materiales de trabajo y referencias con los que estamos trabajando. Bella és un projecte d'intervenció en el paisatge urbà que recorre els quatre barris de Ciutat Vella a Barcelona, i que es troba prop del seu final. Després d'haver visitat el Raval i el barri Gòtic, en els pròxims dies serà instal·lada al barri de Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera del Born. Fins al moment la lluminària ha estat instal·lada en contextos que ens han permès conèixer diferents perspectives i aproximacions al treball de planificació urbana que, centrades en els ciutadans i les persones, intenten construir les millors condicions per a una ciutat habitable i propera. Proposta com una imatge poètica "sense títol" i sense autoria, Bella busca una relació pròpia amb l'espectador-ciutadà, que és qui ha, a la fi, de dotar-la de significat i decidir quina és la seva relació amb ella. El col·lectiu Lupercales és un grup de dissenyadors d'il·luminació que està portant a terme aquest projecte com una invitació a la reflexió sobre la construcció quotidiana de la ciutat. Entenem que la naturalesa oberta, progressiva, del nostre projecte fa que tot intent d'explicar-ho suposi una minva, que es faci difícil acotar. Com la ciutat mateixa, és moltes coses. També es un joc: el proper emplaçament es un secret i els i les ciutadanes hauran de trobar-lo al barri de Sant Pere i Santa Caterina per poder desxifrar el seu missatge, o més bé per re-crear-ho, decidir-ho. Des del 15 de desembre al 8 de gener al Centre Cívic Convent de Sant Agustí hem ocupat l’espai de l’accés per la plaça Acadèmia per plantejar una exposició d’accés lliure. Des del 15 de desembre al 8 de gener al Centre Cívic Convent de Sant Agustí hem ocupat l’espai de l’accés per la plaça Acadèmia per plantejar una exposició d’accés lliure. El objetivo principal es la sensibilización del público y el desarrollo de cierta conciencia acerca de la importancia de la luz y del diseño de iluminación independiente, riguroso y objetivo, entre los ciudadanos, y es por esto que decidimos salir del contexto “controlado” de una sede oficial y de un discurso dirigido solo al público especializado, y trabajar sobre el terreno con actores e instituciones locales sobre un tema concreto que les afectara directamente en su vida diaria y en el cual la iluminación pudiera demostrar el potencial transformador y revelador de nuevas percepciones que posee. La inclusión de la propuesta en el programa del festival LlumBCN facilitará la interlocución con los técnicos y gestores de espacio público que será necesaria para la gestión de permisos y para agilizar la compleja preproducción de la intervención. Conscientes de la necesidad de elaborar una revisión crítica de los parámetros que guían la planificación de la iluminación urbana, Alberto Barberá, Irene Bas y Paolo Portaluri se unen para elaborar una propuesta que engloba esta comunicación en dos niveles: - un taller de alcance específico (25 personas) orientado a profesionales y estudiantes interesados en la materia. - una intervención lumínica del espacio público, cuyo diseño se realiza a lo largo del taller y con la colaboración de entidades de la zona escogida (barrio del Raval). Esta intervención está dirigida a proporcionar una nueva imagen del entorno afectado a sus pobladores y visitantes habituales, y abierto al público en general. No se trata de un evento al uso, en el sentido de que no posee una estructura narrativa, sino de una jornada, una velada. - la elaboración de un informe con los resultados de la experiencia orientado a la prensa especializada en arquitectura, urbanismo e iluminación, así como a encuentros, conferencias y congresos sobre el tema, cuya vida comienza tras el proceso, y de la que el presente documento es el primer paso.]]>

We want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, “quality” of lighting, ergonomy, eficiency, safety… All of these terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete intalations due to energy eficiency requirements is a good opportunity to do so. We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space. We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and heritage, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres require in terms of a lighting project… and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their landscape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.]]>
