Bridging the Gap Between Data and Insight Using Open-Source Tools (ODSC Boston 2015) /slideshow/odsc2015/48865167 odsc2015-150601231741-lva1-app6892
These are the slides for a talk I gave at the 2015 Open Data Science Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. You can check out the interactive map here: http://bit.ly/arcolano-odsc2015-mapbox You can get the Jupyter notebook here: http://bit.ly/arcolano-odsc2015-jupyter ABSTRACT Despite the proliferation of open-source tools for analysis (such as Python and R) and those used for visualization (such as Javascript / D3), there often exist significant gaps between these areas, and those of us trying to navigate the complete arc from data to insight can encounter many obstacles along the way. Fortunately, in recent years there have been many efforts to fill these needs, and today distilling a meaningful visualization from raw data is faster and easier than ever before. In this talk we will use will use examples in geospatial analysis and visualization to illustrate how to open-source tools can work together. Using examples from the RunKeeper mobile app we will show how we currently use these tools to understand better our customers and their data, and to communicate with our colleagues, external partners, and the data community at large.]]>

These are the slides for a talk I gave at the 2014 Boston Data Festival on November 5, 2014. ABSTRACT: Many companies have "big data", but not every company has the resources (or need) for a big data team. In this talk we will discuss lessons I've learned from working as part of a small team within a fast-moving mobile start-up and techniques for getting the most out of your data when you're operating with major time, personnel, and resource constraints.]]>

A Crash Course in A/B Testing: Or, How to Tell If You’re Accomplishing Anything /slideshow/2014-07-ab-testing-crash-course-37221123/37221123 2014-07a-btestingcrashcourse-140721211805-phpapp02
This is a deck I put together to teach the product, program, business development, and marketing folks at RunKeeper about some of the perils and pitfalls of A/B testing. I intended it to be a good first step for people interested in testing but without much background in statistics. Hopefully some other folks find it helpful!]]>

https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/profile-photo-Arcolano-48x48.jpg?cb=1523520662 I am a Senior Data Scientist at TrueMotion, a Boston-based start-up creating mobile apps and big data platforms for making driving safer and more affordable. My areas of interest include data-driven product development, signal processing, machine learning, user testing, and data visualization. Previously I was the Senior Data Scientist at Runkeeper, and before that I spent 10 years as a member of the research staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, working in the fields of cyber security and ballistic missile defense. I received my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 2011, where my research focused on numerical methods for the analysis of massive data sets. arcolano.com https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/2016-09-09-arcolano-bostondatavisualizationsummit20161-161021131431-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/visualizing-risk-2016-boston-data-visualization-summit/67499456 Visualizing Risk (2016... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/2016-09-19-arcolano-dslunchseminarabtestingtheoryandpractice-161020130812-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/ab-testing-theory-and-practice-truemotion-data-science-lunch-seminar/67455130 A/B Testing Theory and... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/odsc2015-150601231741-lva1-app6892-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/odsc2015/48865167 Bridging the Gap Betwe...
