A Little World: Facilitating Safe and Efficient M-Banking in Rural India /slideshow/india-alw-2010/13896067 indiaalw2010-120807021839-phpapp01
The initiative is led by a private sector organization, A Little World (ALW) and its sister entity, a non-profit organization, ZERO Microfinance and Savings Support Foundation (ZMF). ALW and ZMF act as intermediaries between rural communities at one end, and mainstream financial institutions and the government at the other end. ALW offers a secure, lowcost technology driven delivery platform for financial services through special mobile phones that store and help manage a vast amount of customer bank account data, authenticates account holders through photo and biometric identification and allows access to the bank accounts as Point of Service terminals. Since its pilot project in 2006, ALW and ZMF have rapidly grown and are now present in 22 states, with over four million rural customers, 8,314 points of presence and an average of 25,000 new account openings every day.]]>

Through examining case studies of private equity firms from several European countries, this publication explores three possible models of venture philanthropy engagement and provides examples of best practice. The PE industry is increasingly interested in becoming engaged in venture philanthropy activities. This paper identifies a number of motives for PE firms to become involved in venture philanthropy, including the desire to give back to their communities, to help employees develop skills such as judgement, resilience and social competences, and establishing them as a positive social actor.]]>

Strategies for Foundations: When, Why and How to Use Venture Philanthropy /slideshow/strategies-for-foundations-when-why-and-how-to-use-venture-philanthropy/13888913 evpa-knowledge-centrestrategies-for-foundations-120806105843-phpapp02
This paper investigates the venture philanthropy strategies of foundations. We identified six strategies of foundations engaging in venture philanthropy and explain them through case studies of four foundations based in four European countries. We find that there is a spectrum of engagement models for foundations and that even the same foundation may employ various strategies to fit their individual needs and goals. To most foundations, VP serves as a complement to existing practices and only in one case as an alternative.]]>
