Abstract: As representatives of Philips Intellectual Property and Standards which has a long history of having an In-house IP Department for the past 94 years, we are sharing the experiences we have had during this long time. The In-house IP-Analysis division has witnessed several ups and downs in IP business all over the world. With a global presence and with the unique integrated Intellectual Assets Management policy, Philips is currently in the mode of more of in-sourcing than of outsourcing. However, based on business needs, we outsource, and our horizon is wide, spanning different geographies and different languages. Here we present the opportunities and challenges faced by in-house IP Analysis teams, being an integral part of the corporate. Many of these could be common issues for this subgroup of I-HIPP, and we look forward to hearing how these issues are addressed in other corporates.]]>

Emerging trends in IP searching: Machine/AI based searching - Anoop Cheeran & Manish Badani /slideshow/emerging-trends-in-ip-searching-machineai-based-searching-anoop-cheeran-manish-badani/66464042 emergingtrendsinipsearching-160927113548
Abstract: Intellectual Property (IP) analytics is an area that is growing at a fast pace in view of the importance of IP in an increasingly technology dependent world. There are large number of patent applications filed every year, in several different languages; these has made the task of prior art search very challenging. The traditional search strategies using boolean & proximity operators along with select keywords seem increasingly inadequate and unreliable in identifying the relevant prior art. The gap has triggered the development of search engines with features and tools that increasingly rely on machine/artificial intelligence; some of them utilize text-mining and language processing algorithms to quickly zoom into more relevant prior art. Many of these tools uses semantics/natural text, similarity or patent/patent publication – citation based search and categorization approaches. We will share few of our observations on the emerging scenario, covering AI/machine based search options from established players like Orbit and also relatively novice but specialized players like Automatch, Ambercite etc.]]>

The presentation talks about the value of tapping into weak signals from non-patent data sources to aid decisions on business and IP strategy. The aim of such an approach is to continuously monitor the business, technology and competitor landscape for leading indicators that may present an opportunity or pose a threat to an organization’s IP and business. We present a technology approach that addresses the challenges of unstructured content analysis at Big Data proportions - which are inevitable when dealing with weak signals. This was presented during I-HIPP Analyst Virtual Session in July 2016.]]>
