These slides are from my workshop at the OOP 2017 conference in Munich. Abstract: Leaders are often talking about change. But often we do not get the change we wanted. Somehow we feel our culture is hitting back. A root cause is, that Complexity and Systems Thinking are hard to grasp and even harder to apply practically. In this workshop I will based on my own experience being a senior transformational leader in a several 1000 people organization - introduce you to a Systems Thinking tool that can help you make your organizational evolution successful. Together we will try out the tool. ]]>

Companies and organizations are complex, adaptive systems. In this talk you will learn what this actually means and how you can use this to practically deal with your way through your (agile) transition. You will learn why there are no best and no good practices, that you can just copy and everything is fine and what the nature of an agile transition really is. You will learn about an example of a successful agile transition and what factors made it successful. And you will learn to use a tool I have developed, to find and analyze approaches to see whether they might be promising for you to try out. We use (and evolve) this tool at my company, Ericsson (24,000 people in R&D), since 1 遜 years and have found it very helpful. The talk will introduce and make use of Systems Thinking and Complex Adaptive Systems theory. Many people struggle with applying these concepts practically in their daily working life. You will learn how to bring these great and promising theories down on earth and make them practically usable. So, if you are on an agile transformation, no matter whether you are just getting started or whether you have progressed already: this talk will give you new insights and a very solid foundation - based on state-of-the-art leadership- and problem solving approaches to make your journey more successful.]]>

Leading in a Complex World /slideshow/leading-in-a-complex-world/51395512 leadinginacomplexworldhendrikesser-150807183543-lva1-app6892
Thanks to globalization and the emergence and wide spread of new technologies, the world has become a very interconnected place during the past decades. This change has happened and is happening at an ever increasing speed. As a consequence, management and leadership have become increasingly challenging to deal with the resulting complexity. To succeed, traditional approaches to management and leadership are not enough. We need to continuously grow and adapt our leadership capabilities. In this Session you will learn how to cope with this challenge. I will share stories, insights and tools that will help you to increase your leadership bandwidth, making you better prepared for leading in a complex world. One key element is a decent understanding of Systems Thinking, Human System Dynamics and Complex Adaptive Systems theory. All these are very inspiring, yet as a leader I had difficulties to translate these into something actionable and useful in my daily life. And talking to many others (not only leaders) I found that many people share that challenge. So, in this talk you will learn about tools that enable you to deal with complexity from a leadership perspective. I will share stories about how these tools have helped me and my team. You will also learn how to embrace the mindset shift related to Agile and you will learn how to take better decisions using modern leadership approaches. This talk is based on my own experiences as a leader in an agile transformation (2000+ people) and the great inspirations I got from working and discussing with my group colleagues from the Supporting Agile Adoption program (one of the programs sponsored by the Agile Alliance).]]>

One of a leaders biggest challenges is to lead through complexity. As companies consist of formal and informal networks of people working in ever changing, uncertain technical and business environments, they can be regarded as Complex Dynamic Systems. According to Dave Snowden and his Harvard Business Review article from 2007, a good leadership/management approach to complex dynamic systems is Probe-Sense-Respond, i.e. experiment with the system to find advanced ways to maximize (business) value. A crucial part of this approach is to work effectively with the companys tangible and intangible constraints. Also, Peter Senge in his book "The fifth discipline" is introducing Systems Thinking as a key to the Learning Organization. This talk will give a brief introduction into the topic of complex dynamic systems. Based on this I will introduce a tool that me and my team have developed and are experimenting with at Ericsson. The tool helps us to manage the constraints of our complex dynamic company system in a structured way. I will give practical examples of system changes we have done and how we are using the tool to further evolve our company.]]>
