He was one of the legendary Five Emperors. He was mentioned in the Shiji by historian Sima Qian (145 BCE-90 BCE). Tradition holds that he reigned from 2697 BC to 2597 BC.[1] His personal name was said to be G¨­ngs¨±n Xu¨¡nyu¨¢n (¹«ËïÐùÔ¯). He emerged as a chief deity of Taoism during the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE).
