Distribution of Z values in task-fMRI not centered around zero (OHBM 2018) /JuYoungLee60/distribution-of-z-values-in-taskfmri-not-centered-around-zero posterohbmprint-200211172432
Most fMRI results are reported after conducting hypothesis test on every voxel and applying threshold to the test statistics. However, researchers don’t often check the distribution of the test statistics. Theoretically, the null distribution of the Z scores is supposed to resemble standard Gaussian distribution. However, this study illustrates that the Z score distribution is often not centred around 0 but is shifted. With task fMRI dataset acquired from Human Connectome Project (S1200), I evaluated the shift of Z score distribution. The correlation between Z score distribution shift and head motion was very small. Furthermore, subject dependency of the Z score shift was tested by comparing shift of the Z score in different task fMRI. The result showed that Z score shift is not subject-dependent. Lastly, I checked that the Z score shift occurs within the white matter region as well. Based on these results, I suspect that this problem is not due to the physiology of the brain but perhaps due to technical problem of the MRI machine.]]>
