Open source documentation is generally awful, often frightening, and sometimes it’s just outright weird. In this discussion, I will show you examples from the entire spectrum of open source documentation, in an effort to try and help you avoid some of the worst mistakes made by others before you. We will discuss why documentation is important for open source projects, and how to go about getting it written, and written well, without making too much of a fool out of yourself. ]]>

We all know that technical writing is boring. That's why technical writers exist, so that developers don't have to write it. The bad news is that great technical documentation can do wonders for your project. The good news is you don't need to be a dyed-in-the-wool writer to create great technical documentation. Writing documentation for open source projects can be very different from writing for proprietary models. This discussion will cover why it is different, why it is important, and how you can fail to completely suck at it.]]>

https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/profile-photo-Loquacity-48x48.jpg?cb=1522830838 Lana Brindley has several university degrees, a few of which are even relevant to her field. She has has been playing and working with technology since she discovered the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game in the 80's. Eventually, she worked out a way to get paid for her two passions - writing and playing with gadgetry - and has been technical writing ever since. Right now, she's working for Red Hat from her home in Canberra Australia, getting her hands dirty on cloud documentation, and loving every minute of it. She's active in the women in tech community, and is raising her very own geek girl. One day, Lana hopes to write the manual for that, too. lanabrindley.com https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/goodbadwtfsmall-111117233139-phpapp02-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/open-source-docs-the-good-the-bad-and-the-wtf/10211923 Open Source Docs: The ... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/foureasysteps-110531032704-phpapp02-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/open-source-documentation-in-four-easy-steps-and-one-slightly-more-difficult-one/8158612 Open Source Documentat... https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/grassisgreener-110427070332-phpapp01-thumbnail.jpg?width=320&height=320&fit=bounds slideshow/the-grass-is-greener-on-the-open-side-7750301/7750301 The Grass is Greener o...
