Wilderness Touch Screen Display /slideshow/wilderness-touch-screen-display/252314925 finalpresentation-220726031254-33a2a417
Human-wildlife conflicts (HWCs) are interactions between humans and wild animals, often resulting in negative impacts on the animals or humans involved in the conflict. HWC incidents occur for a number of reasons: humans hunt wildlife for food and fur, kill animals for safety or self-defense, collide with them while driving, interfere with nature while sightseeing, and for many other reasons. Parks Canada reported 6,000+ HWC incidents in 2017 and 7,000+ incidents in 2018. The Canadian national parks with the most HWC incidents also happen to be the most visited. We believe that educating park visitors can lead to a reduction in the number of such incidents, saving both wildlife and human lives. We created an interactive visualization for Parks Canada information centers to educate visitors on their impacts on local wildlife. It is accessible at entry points of national parks via a large touch screen. Through this visualization, we hope that users learn more about their impact on wildlife and be more cautious during their visit.]]>
