Adalberto de Paula Barreto, MD, PhD, is a Brazilian social psychiatrist from Fortaleza, the capital of the northeastern state of Cear叩, who trained in medicine in his native Brazil and did postgraduate training in Paris, France with Georges Devereux in ethnopsychiatry as well as in systemic family therapy. His early training in theology shines through his values, his principles, and his compassion for and solidarity with the poor and disadvantaged people of Brazil and Latin America.3 Dr Barreto has created another solution, made in Brazil, a therapeutic resource that he calls integrative community therapy (ICT).4-6 ICT is representative of the Brazilian genius to take things from many sources and synthesize them into something new, like the syncretic Afro-Brazilian religions and the Bossa Nova which adapted Jazz to a Brazilian beat to create something totally new and original. All of this is evident in my interview with Dr Barreto. Key words that stand out from his interview include: community, integrative, pluralism, spirituality, and kairos.]]>

Vamos integrar a terapia sist棚mica com a terapia social dentro do quadro filos坦fico do evento (ou acontecimento) para entender o significado de trauma hoje. Al辿m da filosofia, a tarefa do terapeuta 辿 a de escutar a historia do trauma para testemunhar e honrar as experi棚ncias traumatizantes. My last two columns featured my two-part interview (Part 1, Part 2) with Dennis Palumbo, a Los Angeles psychotherapist and writer. Now, I am in Belo Horizonte in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil for the Brazilian National Congress of Family Therapy. Many Brazilian artists have inspired me, none more so than Ad辿lia Prado whose poem, Com Licen巽a Po辿tica With Poetic Licence, was her entry into the highest reaches of Brazilian letters. The key word was her description of women as desdobr叩vel, who in contrast to men are able to unfold to be flexible and to adapt. And she personifies it (after all it is a poem, not a treatise) by adding: Eu sou. I am. Since my first reading of her poem, I have substituted desdobr叩vel for development and see children as learning, growing, and adapting unfolding in Ad辿lia Prados metaphor.]]>

It is a pleasure to introduce Dennis Palumbo, MA, MFT to the readers of Psychiatric Times. Dennis is a licensed psychotherapist in Los Angeles, CA where he specializes in treating people in the creative arts community of Hollywood. He is uniquely well-suited for this specialized work given his double, even triple skill sets as a former Hollywood scriptwriter and current detective fiction novelist,1 teacher of creative writing,2 and his work with Robert Stolorow, MD, incorporating intersubjectivity theory in his psychotherapeutic work. Dennis will soon be addressing readers of Psychiatric Times in a monthly column of his own, Creative Minds: Psychotherapeutic Approaches and Insights. His latest essay is about his role as Consulting Producer on the recent Hulu TV series, The Patient.3 We have had an enriching exchange about art, life, and psychotherapy for several years. Dennis was our invited guest for the inaugural meeting of APA Caucus on Medical Humanities in Psychiatry in New Orleans, LA in 2022. Dennis uniquely diverse and specialized skill sets allow me to explore the question of the relationship between the psy disciplines and detective fiction, More generally, I wanted to explore the roots of creativity and empathy in creative writing and clinical work and connect it to therapy. ]]>

His latest essay is about role as Consulting Producer on the recent Hulu TV series, The Patient.3 We have had an enriching exchange about art, life, and psychotherapy for several years. Besides international literary fiction and poetry, detective novels and murder mysteries have been my great avocational passion, something that Dennis and I share with such serious thinkers as Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and British social psychiatrist Sir Michael Shepherd, MD who wrote an insightful little book about Sherlock Holmes and Freud. And literary greats from Jorge Luis Borges to TS Eliot chimed in on what makes great detective fiction, not to mention pliers of the trade, especially British detective fiction writer PD James.4

Soon after the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic in 2020, Richard Hortons1 editorial in The Lancet convinced me to radically change my thinking about this socio-medical crisis. His message was blunt and direct: COVID-19 is not a pandemic. This crisis was more accurately seen as a syndemic, encompassing 2 different categories of diseasean infectious disease (COVID-19) spread by a virus (SARS-CoV-2) and an array of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Emily Mendenhall, a pioneer of syndemic studies went further: COVID-19 syndemic is not global, arguing that social context matters.2 Let us unpack this carefully and see what it means for the most vulnerable sector of every countrychildren and youthand why an enlarged biosocial view of biomedicine is required to make sense of diseases and how to handle them.]]>

My contention as a social psychiatrist and social philosopher is that the foundations of psychology and psychiatryand the edifices that are built upon them, from theories to research paradigms to therapeutic interventionsare precisely upside down. Starting with the self, the individual, person, and mind is to start building the roof rather than the foundations of a structure. In the social sciences (such as anthropology, psychology, sociology) and the humanities (from literature to philosophy) it is wiser to start with society, the group, the collective, and relations, then move to the individual, mind, and self. ]]>
