Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI) has long been a significant problem within the health sector with caregivers, nurses and allied health professionals being significantly as risk. There is recognition that tackling MSI, demands multifaceted intervention addressed at an organizational and individual level. Although manual handling involves an interaction between two or more people in transferring (care giver and receiver) and within a social and cultural context, many interventions in manual handling solely seek physical solutions to problems. The involvement of people in manual handling activities creates and social and emotional environment, many of which can help or hinder the transfer process. This presentation will examine of social and emotional aspects of manual handling identifying many of the common barriers and enablers they present. It will provide a framework for addressing these social and emotional elements to profit from opportunities to reduce the physical aspects of manual handling. This presentation will enable participants explore manual handling beyond the physical to address social and emotional aspects results in better outcomes for all stakeholders]]>

This research sought to start filling this gap. We asked a group of experts what skills a care giver needs to display to safely use a standing hoist for both care giver and receiver to be safe.
