The main purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how China strategic intent affected its decisions to invest in France. The main part of the research was conducted by using a unique and comprehensive data set covering a total of 28,542 outward direct investments of China. The dataset gives an insight of China’s outward foreign direct investments by numbers of government approvals with a breakdown by sectors and destinations from 1970 to 2013. By looking at numbers of approvals and the value of investments, this paper gives a better insight on China's strategic intent towards ODI. One reason of the relevance of this dataset compared to commonly used datasets is that, when looking only at flows of FDI in a country, one country could receive a higher amount of FDI in a year (for example huge investments in energy) but less investments from the investors in other countries by the number of deals. Thus, this research gives a better insight by avoiding the hypothesis that huge investments can overshadow other small (but not less) important investments. However, the empirical analysis is based on China’s ODI by government approvals to give a complete understanding of China’s motives of investments. Finally it was found that the traditional factors of FDI determinants to France could not be explained as the same for China.]]>
