February 21, 2023. – A whistleblower exposé report by a New York City-based Federally Certified Court Interpreter and Expert Witness denounces the New York State Department of Labor Unemployment Division for running him through a “hellishly Kafkaesque and ultimately fruitless obstacle course” lasting over a year, at the height of the pandemic, in an attempt to claim close to $7,000 in unemployment benefits denied to him by said agency based on false accusations that he was claiming unemployment illegally. The report lays bare“a deeply embedded culture at this agency that can only be described as one of malfeasance, defined as intentional wrongdoing or misconduct, especially by a public official or officials; one of corruption in the misuse of tax dollars, inasmuch as the agency fails to provide the services and benefits that it is mandated to provide, instead inflicting harm and damage on taxpayers; one of impunity designed to protect and shield its employees and managers from any accountability for flagrantly negligent, incompetent behavior injurious to taxpayers; and one of institutional violence aimed at quashing taxpayer claims by granting an extremely limited window for the appeals process… before an Administrative Law judge without proper time to prepare and without adequate representation.” Krochmal describes this remedy as “clearly and cruelly designed to place citizens at the mercy of a system in which it would have clear advantage and all odds in its favor,” and states that “The institutional culture at the Department of Labor Unemployment Division represents a slap in the face to New York taxpayers, whose hard-earned tax contributions pay for a bureaucracy the modus operandi of which is no less than criminal.”]]>
