The Esri Vector Tile Style Editor helps you quickly and easily create custom basemap styles that match your brand and the type of apps you are building. Start by selecting an existing Esri vector basemap (e.g. World Street Map or Light Gray Canvas) and then begin customizing the layers from there. The edited styles are saved as items in ArcGIS Online. The ArcGIS Online Map Viewer or any custom application can then reference the item to display the basemap. Come to this workshop to learn how you can style your own basemaps using the Esri Vector Tile Style Editor. ]]>

The image services in the Living Atlas of the World are raster datasets. They work and are used just like the raster datasets on your computer’s hard drive. Ten telltale signs of novice cartography /slideshow/ten-telltale-signs-of-novice-cartography-final/156178387 tentelltalesignsofnovicecartographyfinal-190718014816
Through an informal email by this paper's author, nearly 150 cartographers worldwide from academia, government, and the private sector were asked to submit their own list of telltale signs of novice cartography. They were asked to share ten things they think of as signs that a map was made by someone who is still learning or perhaps has failed to learn. The cartographers were not asked to rank the items in the list, nor were they required to provide exactly ten items in the list―in fact, some offered more than ten items, and some offered fewer. Nearly 100 responses were received as of January 1, 2019. The responses were compiled into a single text document. Content analysis was used to analyse the responses by interpreting and coding the text. Additional responses continue to arrive―those responses will also be analysed. The final results of this analysis will be revealed at the International Cartographic Conference in 2019.]]>

Content in the Living Atlas of the World isn’t just for making web maps—it includes ready-to-use data that can be used for analysis in the ArcGIS Platform. The Living Atlas includes hundreds of image services you can use in ArcGIS Desktop and Pro as inputs to geoprocessing tools. That means no downloading, no data preparation, and huge time savings. Image services work so well in ArcGIS, you will be challenged to find how they differ from the raster datasets on your hard drive. With a focus on Pro, this session teaches you about the keys to success when performing analysis with Living Atlas image services.]]>

Atlas mapping in the hybrid age /slideshow/atlas-mapping-in-the-hybrid-age-93844488/93844488 atlasmappinginthehybridage4-12-17compressed-180413215241
Atlases are changing, although the paper paradigm of maps and atlases pervaded recent cartographic history. By nature that paradigm serves, as well as defines, a specific audience in terms of use and presentation. In the production process and at the printing press, the paper paradigm demands certain design and creation workflows that have drastically changed through evolutions in data, mapmaking techniques, and presentation methods. Technological transformations in mapping influence much of this change, and the resulting implications for the design, creation, and distribution of atlases are significant. We are currently transitioning from the Information Age to the Hybrid Age in a technological revolution distinguished by ubiquitous computing, intelligent machines, social technologies, integrated scientific fields, and rapidly-adaptive development strategies. I this new age there is a new kind of atlas—one that is itself ubiquitous, intelligent, social, and integrative. Web services provide easy access to atlas content through ubiquitous computing on smart phones, tablets, phablets, laptops, and desktops—trillions of devices connected via the Internet. The user interface seamlessly integrates the multi-scale slippy maps and their supporting content. The user experience supports intelligent exploration through contextual understanding, intuitive findability, and configurable comparison. Integration with social media provides opportunities to communicate and collaborate with others. Commenting, bookmarking, and note taking provide valuable capabilities for increased personal usability. The resulting, fully-citable set of digital maps and web services brings these important historical documents to life, preserving the past and providing knowledge for current and future generations of users. Get up to speed in this workshop by learning how to manage your space-time data aptly, analyze it appropriately, and map it artfully. A variety of examples are used demonstrate how ArcGIS helps you gain greater understanding of space-time data using powerful analytical tools for aggregating your data into a space-time cube; performing hot spot, cluster, and outlier analyses; and visualizing your data and analysis results. Techniques are also presented for creating captivating and informative displays to share your insights with others. 2018 AAG Annual Meeting Wednesday, April 11, 3:20 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. ]]>

Maps that Engage, Inform, and Inspire /slideshow/maps-that-engage-inform-and-inspire/80295738 mapsthatengageinformandinspirefinal-170929162312
The goal of mapmaking is to make the beauty and the power of maps come alive in a compelling way so that people will be willing to look long enough to learn something. But turning data into a map is about more than knowing software. It’s about knowing how to find the something useful or interesting hidden in the data and reveal those things through graphics designed to inform, engage, and inspire. This, in part, is why mapmaking remains as much an art as a science. It is, as Stuart Allan of Raven Maps says, "the marriage of truth and beauty". In this presentation, I demonstrate, with multiple examples, how maps transform the complexities of data into representations useful for understanding the world around us. They do this by distilling and summarizing information into a very special type of graphic display. Creating these abstractions in such a way that they provide users with valuable information products that reflect and represent the complexities of the earth is the real challenge of those who create the maps of today.]]>

In this presentation, I demonstrate, with multiple examples, how maps transform the complexities of data into representations useful for understanding the world around us. They do this by distilling and summarizing information into a very special type of graphic display. Creating these abstractions in such a way that they provide users with valuable information products that reflect and represent the complexities of the earth is the real challenge of those who create the maps of today.

Historical maps and atlases in print form are often difficult for large numbers of readers to find, access, and use. In this workshop, learn how to bring these valuable resources to life in web apps that not only provide users with access to the origin print content, but also add value through the user’s experience with the app. This workshop takes you step-by-step through a workflow for converting map collections and atlas content to a format that can be shared online. You’ll learn how to scan, georeference, and build metadata for the maps and atlas pages; how to convert the scanned map images to image services; and how to create a web app that gives users access to the scanned images and provides functionality for useful and engaging online map and atlas exploration.]]>
