The elements of kubernetes /slideshow/the-elements-of-kubernetes/83767603 theelementsofkubernetes-171210060755
The Elements of Style is one of the most important and foundational guidelines on how to write well. It has effectively summarized, in a list of seminal guidelines, how to harness the power of the English language to write high quality prose of almost any kind. In computing, we have similar guides for various technologies. Python offers The Zen Of Python, Ruby has The Rails Doctrine, and so on... One of the powers these documents wield is that they help serve as a north star that guides an entire community toward the same goals. I believe we need a similar guide for Kubernetes. It would describe how app developers and operators should think about and use the features in Kubernetes to build and deploy reliable, stable apps. Armed with such a guide, we could all hope to better understand the essence of Kubernetes in pursuit of building better cloud native apps. We dont have anything like this today, but many in the Kubernetes community have strong, detailed opinions for what should go in this guide. Much of it is tribal knowledge or scattered in blog posts. In this talk, Ill try to bring many of these opinions together and lay out an Elements of Kubernetes guide for app developers and operators alike. Ill do so by relating each element to stories and details Ive seen in the community that reveal what makes a good Kubernetes and cloud native app. This talk was given at KubeCon / CloudNativeCon 2017 on December 7th, 2017 in Austin, TX]]>

Functional Programming in Go /slideshow/functional-programming-in-go/78053922 fpingo-170719181822
These are the slides from my GopherCon 2017 Talk. Viewed as a set of design patterns, we can apply functional programming concepts to Go code to get simpler, more modular code. I'll eschew most of the FP theory and show some of these concepts and patterns in real code. I'll also show how small, local bits of "functionalization" can lead to large improvements over time.]]>

OSCON 2014 - The Epic Battle: Scala at PayPal /arschles/the-epic-battle-scala-at-paypal-oscon-2014 oscon2014-140722172041-phpapp02
From my presentation at OSCON 2014 http://www.oscon.com/oscon2014/public/schedule/detail/37779 Abstract: Theres only one way to do it here at PayPal with a framework. Everything youll ever need is done if you stay inside the lines. Imagine my reaction when I joined PayPal with Scala and high hopes. We have many reasons to avoid the monolithic framework, so we were going against the grain from day 1. My team came on to shake things up and weve been doing just that. We brought Scala to PayPal, built small components to defeat framework-itis and generally pissed some people off. Now we want to open source the stuff were building. Im going to talk about our challenges so far, and how we overcame them. Ill have tales (both funny and sad) to tell about my experience so far, and Ill share plenty of lessons learned along the way. ]]>
