I was on the Stampede Trail (Into the Wild), near Healy Alaska, twice while Chris McCanless (Alexander Supertramp) was out there. After the first venture, crossing the braided river in a Toyota Tercel multiple times, I inquired about the "road", and was told by a local Healian that it was an old abandoned road, and there was nothing, and nobody out there, except the kid Jim dropped off, back in the spring. I had several friends with me on that first trip, from the nearby Harper Lodge on the edge of Denali National Park. I feel like we were probably the closest people to him, during his stay.
