With scaling Lean and Agile practices comes new challenges for dealing with handoffs and dependencies. Dependencies are inevitable. Trying to avoid them is one strategy with lots of effort commonly put into this strategy in the form of upfront planning. But, managing dependencies is not just about avoiding them. It’s also about working to minimise the impact (to flow) of dependencies. In this workshop we will work through several strategies (and hopefully uncover more along the way) with participants leaving the session armed with an array of strategies to improve systemic flow.]]>

Lean estimation and planning workshop /cazano7/lean-estimation-and-planning-workshop leanestimationplanningtrackingworkshopversion-140917043200-phpapp02
I ran this 2hr workshop at Lean Agile Scotland in September 2014. These slides are complimented by practical hands-on exercises to help participants learn the basic essentials of planning and tracking a Lean or Agile software delivery. How long will it take? How much will it cost? The two questions that constantly haunt development teams. This session is in two parts. Part one is how to estimate before the project has even started - normally in the context of when you're building the business case to secure funding for the project to proceed. Part two then covers the detail of how to size, estimate, plan, and track progress once funding has been secured and the project has started. This is an instructor led hands-on workshop where attendees will work out how much a phantom project will cost and when it will be complete. ]]>

Systemic Flow Mapping /slideshow/systemic-flow-mapping/14449582 systemicflowmapping-publicversion-120925052307-phpapp02
Systemic Flow Mapping is a technique for visualising organisation-wide flow, bottlenecks, and constraints across multiple delivery teams and departmental boundaries. Its aim is to provide enlightenment into wasteful, inefficient, and stressful workplaces helping to inform and shape organisational change using Kanban. Systemic Flow Mapping facilitates the implementation of Kanban at scale showing the negative systemic impact of local optimisation and provides insight into the wider implications and decisions in organisational structure and flow.]]>
