Survival for the Fields family was not easy. Chris’ mother, determined to give her children a better life, worked long hours at the local grocery store. Chris was left home alone to care for his younger brother and sister. Despite the challenges of being a young, black youth, Chris was able to stay away from the troubles that have plagued many poor, inner-city youth. Chris excelled in school, but with this success came a set of challenges, such as ridicule, bullying, and violence from the neighborhood kids. It was during this time that Chris’ stepfather would ent
