This presentation addresses the issue of firm performance using the analytical frameworks provided by the constructs of routines and dynamic capabilities. Conceptualizing routines as the building blocks of capabilities, we focus our attention on a process acting as a bridge between the micro level perspective offered by routines and the meso / macro level view provided by capabilities. We call this process “capability assembly”. Within this context, the purpose of this dissertation is to characterize how individual routines are assembled into capabilities for new product and service development in knowledge-intensive business services firms (KIBS) based on a sample of Chilean firms. We analyze the theoretical micro foundations of routine emergence and evolution, knowledge transformation processes and particular mechanisms underlying capability formation. We found routines are assembled into capabilities through five specific processes and four influencing factors. We also describe a sequence of assembly, finding that it varies in complexity according to the relative influence of specific factors on individual routines. We summarize these findings proposing a general model that systematizes the elements at conceptual level. Based on this and its implications for management we suggest the assembly process is a dynamic capability on its own. ]]>
