I grew up in a military family, when the draft was still in effect, and when service to one’s country brought honor and respect to a family, no matter how poor or poorly educated they were. I don’t know how many duty stations we were transferred to, but at the time, in the late ‘40s, there were very few things like motels on a non-existent highway system (which wouldn’t be built until Eisenhower became President). So traveling from one duty station to another meant we camped out at night or made do with cheesy inns so we could bathe. My parents had an old c
