Wide eyes, a face of surprise, hesitantly asking: why here? This is a typical reaction to new international students who come to study in the central agricultural region of the U.S. Stereotypical images have made the central U.S. to be perceived as merely flyover states to many people, and surprising destinations when chosen for study, relocation, or even travel. For many who are from rural flyover country communities, finding better job opportunities and more diverse options for living have been convincing enough to move elsewhere, causing considerable population decline. This paper investigates the concept of place attachment in the State of Kansas, USA and shows that despite individuals emotional bonds to certain aspects of their state, most notably the communal aspect, most intend to leave to seek opportunities elsewhere. This study unfolds community attachment factors to an agricultural region and also identifies the types of attachment people have with it. ]]>

The Study of Safavi Northern Chahar-Bagh Street of Shiraz, Iran; from the Standpoint of Integrated Conservation and Development Based on Historical Urban Landscape Approach /slideshow/the-study-of-safavi-northern-chaharbagh-street-of-shiraz-iran-from-the-standpoint-of-integrated-conservation-and-development-based-on-historical-urban-landscape-approach/152962943 aaudvolume11issue22pages9-23-190701152423
The historical urban landscape is a new approach towards the historical city as the product of human interaction with micro ecosystem over the passage of time that has recently gained a special position in urban conservation. This paper begins with raising the question that how this approach can be used to solve the challenges of conservation and development of historical cities. Exploring the conservation documents indicate that viewpoint to historical city has shifted from the atomistic perspective to holistic, static to dynamic, product-oriented to process-oriented, conflict with micro-ecosystem to interact with micro-ecosystem, and the contrast of conservation and development to the integration of them. The purpose of this paper is to review the northern Safavi Chahar-Bagh street of shiraz in the city master plan to find out how the street conservation and development is based on historical urban landscape. The data for this research were collected through observations and documents review and were analyzed qualitatively. The survey results show that the new doctrines of urban conservation seek to integrate conservation and development based on historical urban landscape; however, the definition of the Historical city boundary in the master plan of shiraz is still based on static and atomistic doctrines that consider historical cities limited to the historical wall. This is while the northern Chahar-Bagh street of shiraz which was the main historical axis of the city during the Safavi period was located outside the historical wall of the city. Not paying attention to this street has caused the gradual destruction of this historical urban landscape, despite the individual protection of some of its elements. Reviewing the case study based on the historical urban landscape approach reveals the need for a reconsideration and revision of the developments urban plans.]]>

A definition of authenticity concept in conservation of cultural landscapes /slideshow/a-definition-of-authenticity-concept-in-conservation-of-cultural-landscapes/152962431 473-2010-1-pb-190701152224
Cultural landscape can be defined as the result of human interaction with nature over time, which has led to the formation of the many and diverse layers of value. Currently, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre has a unique role among other scientific associations. In recent years, the World Heritage Center has put efforts into developing a framework and measures for evaluation and management of cultural landscapes. Moreover, the concept of authenticity; as the transmitter of values and significance of cultural landscape, is considered as the key component in the process of cultural landscape conservation. A lot of scientific resources have pointed out the importance of authenticity in the process of conserving cultural landscapes. However, the role of authenticity within the domain of conservation of cultural landscapes has received little attention. One of the main reasons can be lack of adaptation between conventional definitions of UNESCO and international documents concerning the authenticity for including the flexible and dynamic structure of cultural landscapes around the world. Therefore, this paper seeks to explore and develop a flexible framework in order to redefine the concept of authenticity in relation to cultural landscapes, which has some overlaps with UNESCO definitions despite its differences. For developing this framework, Iranian-Islamic philosophy of Mollasadra is applied and described with some examples of cultural landscapes in Iran. TYPE VERSUS STEREOTYPE: AN ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE STUDENTS PERCEPTIONS OF US CITIES AND PUBLIC SPACES /slideshow/type-versus-stereotype-an-analysis-of-international-college-students-perceptions-of-us-cities-and-public-spaces/152960343 1630-4407-1-pb1-190701151435
In their minds, people have images of places they have never visited. In the twenty-first century, the constant exposure to media has had a great role in shaping peoples perception of foreign places. Despite the revealing aspect of media, they also play an important role in creating misconceptions about other countries. This paper explores international college students perceptions of United States cities and public spaces before and after coming to study in the US. It also investigates the role of media and representations in shaping their conceptions or misconceptions of the US. Forty-one Kansas State University international students from different countries participated in an online survey about their perceptions of US building types, infrastructure, and governance/policy regarding the built environment. About 58% of the participants claim that their image of US cities and public spaces changed after studying there; with only 15% claiming that US cities and public built environment are shown like they are in their home countries. Small US cities have a poor image in international students perceptions in comparison to the rich image of big cities most notably New York City. This paper not only argues that peoples' perceptions of places can change after visiting them in person, but also it highlights the role of media in creating misconceptions about foreign places. The findings can highlight the importance of media in managing city branding. ]]>
