/fredberinger/the-perfops-revolution-shutterflys-journey-to-faster-performance
perfops-170707182334 n 2016, Shutterfly, the leader in photo services and personalized gifts in the United States, embarked on a major program to accelerate every aspect of its website while building a PerfOps culture spanning across engineering, operation and product teams. The goal? Offer the fastest experience to customers while increasing revenue, conversion and SEO traffic. Some of the largest retailers and marketplaces went through this journey: As an example, Pinterest announced that their initiatives resulted in a 40% decrease in wait time, a 15% increase in SEO traffic and a 15% increase in conversion rate to signup. There is a strong correlation between faster web performance and higher business KPIs and Shutterfly saw a big opportunity for their customers and business.
For the past 18 months, with strong support from Shutterfly鈥 senior staff, Fred Beringer, VP Digital Customer Experience is acting as champion for performance and with help from his product and engineering peers, crafted a strategy to rip the benefits of FAST web performance. They together kicked off a number of major initiatives, all targeted at faster performance.
These initiatives include:
鈥 Revamped NFR (Non-functional Requirement) process to address performance and scalability requirement during the design phase.
鈥 Continuous testing on pre-production using a Gatling based framework to identify speed degradation during sprints.
鈥 Back-end optimization via profiling (using YourKit) to identify CPU and Memory inefficiencies (aka hotspots).
鈥 Implemented the top 10 front-end optimization industry best practices.
鈥 Benchmarked CDNs providers to find the best suited for Shutterfly performance requirements.
鈥 Leveraged AppDynamics to understand, troubleshoot and optimize key business transactions.
鈥 Implemented a RUM solution (SOASTA mPulse) to provide real-time visibility into each customer experience.
鈥 Implemented Synthetic Monitoring (NeuStar) for continuous testing and performance analysis of key user journeys.
鈥 Implemented a comprehensive Production Load and Performance program leveraging SOASTA CloudTest to prepare for Q4 peak days.]]>

topbestpracticesforsuccessfulmobiletestautomation-131205170620-phpapp01 Mobile apps have brought a whole new set of challenges when it comes to testing: Fast paced development cycles with multiple releases per week, multiple app technologies and development platforms to support, tons of devices and form factors, and additional pressure from enterprise and consumers less patient with low quality apps. With these new challenges, come a new set of mistakes testers can make!
Fred has worked with dozens of mobile test teams to help them avoid common traps when building test automation for mobile apps and would like to share some best practices that could be useful to a lot of developers and testers starting with mobile test automation.
Best practices such as:
鈥 When, what and where to automate?
鈥 Picking the right wait to handle unreliable back-end calls or device performance
鈥 Building testability in a mobile app
鈥 Automating the automation (!)
鈥 Mix and match performance testing and functional testing
In this talk, Fred will bring some real stories (struggles!) and how small changes in process made these mobile apps 10x more reliable!]]>

movingsoaintocloud2011-110513071154-phpapp02 Today in retail, financial services, media, telecommunications and a host of other industries, more and more business is transacted through consumer web sites and mobile applications. With new channels creating spikes in traffic, highly complex system architectures, and internet-savvy customers, websites and web applications must be tested at scale to maximize business results and avoid a catastrophic crash. However, whether due to time or cost or other reasons, upwards of 90 percent of web applications are not fully tested before launching. If testing is done, many times it's with a small percent of expected traffic, which is then extrapolated for an estimation of performance.
Cloud computing is changing the game for testing web applications. Cloud testing enables, for the first time, performance testing that complements the lab and accounts for the conditions in a production environment, such as traffic spikes, network latency, firewalls, and other factors. And it can be done far more affordably than traditional testing methods, as part of agile development cycles, and without an army of highly skilled performance engineers.
