During the first months of 2017, I have been working on a series of oil paintings that were created using cold wax medium. Each painting plays a role in the series "Underneath it All" though the series is now beginning to move more clearly into the landscape with a background clearly rooted in the landscape and "mentions" of trees, flora and fauna. Marks and drawing are defining the images and color has become more saturated]]>

This is what it looks like when we are enjoying an encaustic workshop in my studio and on location in colleges and universities. There are so many avenues to explore and so many ideas that are generated during the course of a one day or two day workshop. The next workshop is scheduled for June 14 & 15, 2014.]]>

Layers of Memory /helenderamus/layers-of-memory layersofmemory-140505152320-phpapp01
My paintings, works on paper and monotypes investigate memory both its fragility and power. I am especially interested in finding ways to depict the concept of memory and the passage of time using nature and the landscape. My inspiration for images comes from working many hours in the studio and from taking photographs along with observing and collecting objects from the natural world. Through drawing and marking making, I probe the theme of the layers of memory and the passage of time. ]]>

https://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/profile-photo-helenderamus-48x48.jpg?cb=1592683333 As a painter and photographer, my primary mediums are encaustic, oil, and work on paper. Work on paper, using India Ink and graphite is a major part of my practice. My drawings lead me to the development of ideas and though they stand alone, they also lead to larger work. I often use the landscape as a metaphor in my paintings about all the visual scraps, translucent bits and pieces and neuronal fragments found in the layers of memory. My studio is housed in an old factory building built in the 1940’s in Metro-Atlanta. I conduct critiques, as well as teach and mentor artists, both new and established.
