Adopt a Mound is a concept for a conservation management tool targeted schools and local communities in rural Denmark. Adopt a Mound engages local communities in the preservation of burial mounds. Students or classes from local schools can register, locate, and adopt a local burial mound. By performing a list of monthly or yearly tasks users earn badges in the system’s reward program. All performed tasks are registered in log, which collects the site's contemporary history and which can be accessed by users and heritage authorities. Adopt a Mound gives students a tangible, 'hands-on' experience with their local past. Basic tasks can be removing bushes and trees or collecting trash, photographing or surveying the mound. More advanced tasks can be contacting local authorities to secure access and signage to the sites. Thereby students learn about local democracy. Adopt a Mound is thus a recipe for heritage site development from local initiative and aims to unlock the contemporary potential of our prehistoric heritage. You can follow the development of the project on www.facebook.com/AdoptAMound The project was deleveloped during the #Hack4DK, Denmark's first cultural heritage hackathon, Oct 5-6th 2012 at the Royal Library in Copenhagen. ]]>
